What I believe about calculated risks

There’s something about calculated risks that does not align with how I make sense of the world.

I believe we can’t create from life from a place of calculated risks. And it is our task to create in our lifetime, in the broadest possible sense of the word.

Most of the time when we do not create from life and its messy nature, it is because we are too occupied by controlling it instead. We try to control what is utterly uncontrollable in its every second. In doing so, we fail to make our life be about what’s really important to us.

In fact, I believe that calculated risk is equal to controlled life. They are both illusions.

If these are illusions, what can be our choice?

I found my answer in Peter Block's "The Answer to How is Yes":

“Choosing to act on what matters is the choice to live a passionate existence, which is anything but controlled and predictable.”

Acting on what matters makes us feel alive and yes, it is risky. Probably the more it matters, the riskier it is. There’s a tension of passionate existence vs control and predictability. I’ve been faced with it many times and I bet you have been too.

It’s a choice we design in our inner conversation. So, in that conversation at the back of our mind, what are our questions?

Because before going to the right answer (if ever), we need to stay with the bold questions. What’s waiting for us to be asked in the attempt of resolving the tension?

I believe that in an uncontrollable and unpredictable nature of life, it’s never about knowing what the right answer is. It’s about asking what is the thing that matters to us so much that we’re willing to keep cutting through discomfort to catch a glimpse of vision. And feel alive.
